a la polonaise?

Gosh - I'm not so up on the types of dresses - do you have a particular painting you are thinking of that you could describe or post the img - here.

Thanks!
Axel

I am no specialist either, so please, correct me if I'm wrong... "A la polonaise" are dresses with turned back facings (retroussis), as you can see on image 2. It's very fashionable now again ! And I love it !!!

I am not so sure about image 1, that seems to me rather "à l'anglaise"... however, google says it is a "à la polonaise" dress. Maybe you can try on this wonderful site, Axel :
http://www.costumes.org/history/100pages/18thlinks.htm
... so complete I have no courage enough for searching right now !

On visit this one : chenilles et papillons
It's just a dream, and dress safrancoloured designed for fall (automne) is a "à la polonaise one", in my view. But, once again, I am no specialist at all...

Hi Pimprennelle,
Thanks for your information on polonaise dresses.
Very interesting - appreciate the illustrations front and back.
Perhaps, ohaapydaggger can also add a bit more and tell which of MA's pictures show this favorite image and why it's appeal to her.

Also, Pim, I at last replied to your comment to me on my fav picture Marie Antoinette en velours bleu. I welcome your further response.

Cyberhugs,
Axel

Well, Axel... this comment moves me... I don't know the genesis of this portrait, I have found the crown of France, and guess the two-headed Habsburg eagle must me on the red velvet, in perspective just under the crown. This perpective may be relevant, don't you think so ?

Red in contrast with blue. Red with this embrodered eagle and blue like the French colour of royalty par excellence. The dominants are red, deep blue and white. Even the book the queens is reading is in reply, since its cover is red and enters in the perspective of the table and the pillow.

Then, the queen's carnation is almost as white as this lace on her bosom, this faither on her toque and her huge, infinite immaculate skirt. White and untouchable, looking like an amazone in her long dark mantel.

Her attitude appears to me in the same time regal, majestic, and incredibly feminine. Regal her poise, so straight, head up, and so feminine her gesture on this pillow, her delicate little hand. Her bosom, ample bosom of a middle-aged mother... but also so attractive with its luminescent whiteness, its silky perfection.

Of course, I agree with you that this portrait displays a fascinating majesty. And I'll refer to colours once again, this blue of this gown deeper than the French pillow under the crown, so dark that it may appear black. Isn't linked to Marie-Therese, forever in black, always in mourning in front of her children ? Maybe, inconsciously, dark is the colour of womanly power in the eyes of Antoinette ?

Anyway, as royal as she may be on this painting... God... how sweet is her face, how tender her features, how soft this half-smile, how fragile her slightly drooping eyes... She will never be another empress Marie-Therese, even if surrounded by dubble-headed eagles... She will always remain this fairy tale princess we would try to rescue for ever and ever !

... splendid Pimprenelle! :D :D

I'm drinking your intervention!

You wrote a very beautiful description of Marie-Antoinette, in all her splendour, her dignity, her nobility and broadly her characteristic of Queen of France!

Indeed we can see on this portrait a real Queen :D

Dear Pimprennelle,

I agree with every word of praise Louis-Charles wrote.

I truly drank up, really marvelled at your comment, Pimprennelle, on the portrait Marie-Antoinette, en velours blue.

Your post was sheer poetry of the heart to describe to all the matchless beauty of Marie-Antoinette

Cyberkisses,
Axel

Here's another copy of MARIE ANTOINETTE, EN VELOURS BLEU, to view as we read Pimprennelle's post in reply to mine - her most memorable comment on this majestic 1788 image, Vigee's last before French Rev Image

Thank you, both of you... I am really touched, since it is true I wrote with all my heart, and was afraid of having been "too much"... But she is so inspiring that, when you fall into her eyes and let you guide, words come by themselves, don't they ?

However, I know my English is far from being perfect ! But the best way to learn is to practize, and surfing is an excellent exercise !

With regards to you, dear Louis-Charles, you really surprise me ! Of course, being another Frenchspeaking person, I can't judge, but I think you express your ideas and feelings very clearly in English, and that you use a rich vocabulary ! Congratulations, my friend !

And... to talk about Marie-Antoinette, we all would learn Chinese if necessary, wouldn't we ?

Thank you very much it's nice, but I'm far from being on your level
But I understand what you feel by seeing a painting of Marie-Antoinette. Me also I become dreamer and I will be able to write some and speak about her during hours... :o
It's for this reason that I have even much pleasure to speak about Marie-Antoinette in english :P

Indeed, without problem and even with big pleasure

No problem, Linda. :D

I just thought if you wanted to tell more or point to a particular painting it might be fun to hear of that.

Warm regards,
Axel
