Post Re: The Temple Prison
I was a little surprised to see that there was no topic on the Temple - or have I missed it someplace else? I stumbled into a website today and got these pictures there.

Post Re: The Temple Prison
It is coincidental that you should post these photos this weekend, as on Saturday I was standing on the painted outline on the road of the exact location of the Grosse Tour. It is right next to the town hall of the 4th district, just outside the Temple square gardens. I participated in a guided walk of the Temple quarter. The links with the ancient order of the Knights of the Temple are quite fascinating. This was a quite massive walled enclave with its' own palace (which belonged to the Comte d'Artois at the time, le Palais du Grand Prieuré, in which MA occasionally had dinner after going to the Opera), church and fiscal régîme. And of course two prisons, la petite et grande Tour, the latter being 50m in height with 2.5m thick walls! Near the Hôtel de Boufflers (still standing) there is a wall map showing the lay out of the enclave. Napoleon had the whole area raised to the ground in the early 1800's to avoid it becoming a place of Royal pilgrimage.

Baron, I was surprised to learn that the Temple was a walled enclosure as shown in the first photo I posted - I had not known this!

A city within the city. It was a mediaeval stronghold of the Knights of the Temple.

This is the most detailed and best picture of the temple I have seen. Where on earth did you find it.

I wish I knew where I found it! I was just playing around one day and happened to come across it. I think I may have copied it from a book.
