I too think that heartbreak can kill. It produces so much angiush and can take away one's will to live. It stresses the body and spirit. Stress leads to all sorts of physical problems. Mind -body connection. I deal with alot of elderly people and in many cases when one spouse dies, it isn't long before the other goes - a lot of the time, it's within 6 months to a year. People always say they died of heartbreak.

As for the rumors, I saved a few 18th century pornographic pamphlets and it really surprises me how graphic they are, and these ideas, we spoke about the tremendous lack of hygiene, I really don't see anyone was bothered about the "state" of the bodies. Let me stop myself here...

Maybe no one was bothered about the "state" of the bodies because it was the norm for them and they didn't know any different (?). Finish your thought - I'd love to see where that was going!

So to be banned from the forum!
I read in one novel about Josephine - that was based on facts (you may think how much after you read the rest)) that Napoleon introduced to her something new in making love so he required her to wash herself each time before his visit. That stayed in my mind so I naively thought that it wasn't a common practice before. Then I found some interesting 18th century engravings showing almost everything one would think is the invention of a modern mind and a modern approach towards sexuality. So what do you say, rumor or not? :shhh:

I'm sorry Marija I didn't understand the last sentence:

Could you explain? :)

I think like Lilly that they had a much more natural attitude to sex, basically because they were obliged to be down to earth in many ways because of the lack of modern facilities and other such comforts...

Like walking in the minefield. I meant is this true about Napoleon, did you hear or read anything similar?

I am not sure I read that. But I do know that Joséphine was indeed not very keen on hygiene, unlike Napoleon, who bathed every day. She particularly had bad teeth. So I would not be surprised if that was true.

As far as I know, until the middle of the XX century, only prostitutes bathed on a daily basis.

I do not understand what you mean by "he introduced to her something new about love making". I think that Joséphine was the more sexually experienced of the two... and it was not that hard to impress the young Bonaparte on that matter ! So he probably learned a lot from her in bed, rather than the other way round. Or did you just mean that he insisted on her bathing before having sex -which was not her wont ?

Hm... Apparently he read it in some book from the East so started giving her... oral sex! ( some people just love the theory that pleasing woman began with Casanova (not many read Casanova though) and that before to please a woman was totally unimportant). Yes, that was written in a novel, based on facts, about Josephine. He liked it so much that he ordered her to wash herself each time before he come to her. And that was something new to her. I said all now. I read it quite a while ago but it stayed in my mind so seeing all these pamphlets and erotic engravings (I have quite a few in the book by Mirabeau "The lifted curtain" (or the upbringing of Laura) I realized that this is probably very silly and untrue! As "this" was something well know it seems. After seeing all these engravings, I see that sex was the same in the 18th century and now. A few exhibition you would say the modern society invented - 18th century had it!

Connected from NY!)) So This is getting hot!))

How do we know what they got up to in bed? Unless they were indiscreet enough to talk about it which seems to be the case here I guess!)

It seems to be clear that josephine inspired napoleon sexually as apparently she wasn't in the full freshness of her beauty when he met her...she cast a sexual sensual spell on him and i guess this oral sex is part of that whole thing.

I just speak about what I read, including that he sent her notes to wash herself before each visit, but the more I write about it the more wrong it seems and hard to add any credibility to it. It is novel based on historical facts - I really prefer biographies. By the way, he was clearly in love and I just love his love letters.

I had a feeling it was oral sex you were speaking of - the washing herself part gave it away! The book from the East was probably the Kama Sutra.

I hate to be 'that person' but would you like to open a new topic on this subject? This is not really about Marie Antoinette and libelles. :angel8:

No, but this is straying off topic a bit - whilst natural - I would prefer to keep it about Marie Antoinette. You could open a broader topic if you like. :angel3:

Yes please do put it in La Belle Lumiere for open, frank discussion! Please keep in mind that I am not about restricting freedom here, I know that conversations take their organic, natural course. We like to keep discussions to point for those that are interested in the original idea.
