I don't recall anything about walking/jogging but Diane was an accomplished horsewoman. Mary emulated her and she no doubt was trained well by Diane. A writer of their time wrote of Diane teaching Mary to handle a falcon. Diane had those same lessons from her father when she was a very young girl.

I heard that she liked jogging as well, and had cold baths -like the Du Barry later on.

I have never really understood the point of cold baths...

Personally, I hate cold water, and I don't see the point either! But Diane claimed that it invigorated her and she bathed in the cold river every day, I believe she did so even in the winter. She had a trap door from her bedroom at Chenonceau so that she could slip into the water without being seen by the servants. That door is still there, and I have a photo on my web site of the river as Diane would have seen it. It looks VERY scary!

She was among the first in France to have a bathtub, both at Anet and Chenonceau. The early ones were wood with a linen liner, and Diane appears in one of these in a painting. Later, she had silver bathtubs.

What is unusual is that it seems therefore that she knew how to swim! So few did at that time!

How amazing about that trapdoor! How such things bring us closer to these almost mythical figures! Objects in their very tender intemporal way connect us with our necessarily mortal past. Now we all have the picture in our mind of the beautiful favourite lowering herself into the cold waters of the Loire.

Part of Diane's routine was to bathe in cold water and horseback riding for a few hours each morning. The trapdoor that led from her bedroom to the river was intended for her to bathe naked in the Loire in privacy. Her room is said to have opened onto the bridge and the trapdoor led down some steps to the river. The staircase is located under the first arch of the bridge.

I'm no fan of cold bathing either....so I looked up WHY anyone would want to immerse themselves in a cold bath. Surprisingly, there are health benefits to such a practice and it goes back to ancient times. Here are some of the effects of cold water: It improves circulation...relieves depression...strengthens the immunity system....increases energy and well-being...makes for healthy skin and hair...AND - it improves one's sex life!

Hmmm, interesting! In Diane's day they probably didn't know any of that. But she was living proof!

You are clearly quite an expert on Diane de Poitiers! :)

Out of interest are you also interested by Marie Antoinette and have you read about her, and/or the 18th century in general?

If so you may also wish to contribute to other subjects here, as this forum needs input from people such as yourself.

I am very interested in Marie Antoinette, and that period of history. French history is my passion, but I also enjoy English history.
