Post Best film version of Marie Antoinette?
Hello :D

I was just wondering what movies there are out there on M.A., and which one you think is the best. I've seen the 1938 Norma Shearer one, which (despite its inaccuracies) I greatly enjoyed.

Also, any good period dramas featuring the Queen would be appreciated.

I did not see many films on Marie-Antoinette, but I liked much "L'Autrichienne" by Grannier-Deferre, where Marie-Antoinette is played by Ute Lemper, very good in this film

Indeed ! "L'Autrichienn" is, in my opinion, the best movie ever made about Marie-Antoinette. It is historically acurate (costumes, casting, dialogues... even her slight German accent !), and very moving. Ute Lemper plays... just wonderfully !

I also enjoy the French series "Marie-Antoinette" by Guy-André Lefranc, starring Geneviève Casile. Marie-Antoinette's life is cleverly depicted with 4 episods. And Geneviève Casile is a wonderful actress, noble and proud. I also adore costumes and hairdos in this movie. Geneviève wears a true "à l'enfant" hairdo !

Thank you for your recommendations!

By the way, does "L'Autrichienne" cover all of M.A.'s years of Versailles, or just 'the end' at the Concierge and the guillotine? :?

^ I believe its just her trial. I personally have never seen it :(

Norma Shearer is perfect as Marie Antoinette in the 1938 film and despite its inaccuracys its worth the watch! Can't wait to get the DVD
The only other one I've seen is "The Affair of the Necklace" Which is so inaccurate. They try to make Jeanne De La Motte look like some hero. Its awful. I think Joely Richardson did an alright job as Marie Antoinette (although she looked too old for the role IMO) They have MA as coming off far too snotty

"L'Autrichienne" covers from Marie-Antoinette's arrival in the conciergerie on till her getting in this awful cart.

Van Dyke's movie is so full of historical inaccuracies that it is impossible to take it into consideration ! I guess it was miss Coppola's main source of inspiration !

I think that the best film on MA is L'Autrichienne, with Ute Lemper. It is wonderfull.
But I can't say that of Coppola's film!

It certainly seems that way, Pim.

I've seen the M.A. trailer on line and (gasp) I even entered the website! I have to say, its a real pity that this film (by Coppola) is such a fraud, because the production looks so lavish: the cotumes, rooms, party scenes, etc. Also, on the website, they said that the Comte d'Province was a friend of Marie's, which we all know he wasn't, and they didn't even mention d'Artois!

But we can see the Comtesse d'Artois, who is played by Sarah Adler, who is so insipid...
