Post New Film
I am very much looking forward to the new film (I live in Hollywood, and though it may be inaccurate, I am inclined to love movies, particularly supporting those by female directors), I have not had the pleasure of seeing the films you mention. The only film on the subject I've seen is "The Affair of the Necklace." Whatever a person's views on the revolution, I was aghast that a criminal and one of the main people responsible for the deaths of thousands of people, Madame Valois, was portrayed as such a heroine, while the Queen, who was honestly a victim of the crime, is seen as getting what she deserved. In the words of Oscar Wilde, "The only duty we owe to history is to rewrite it." I know many of you are European, forgive my American colloqualism, but -- it bugged me.

Hello :D

I was just wondering what movies there are out there on M.A., and which one you think is the best. I've seen the 1938 Norma Shearer one, which (despite its inaccuracies) I greatly enjoyed.

Also, any good period dramas featuring the Queen would be appreciated.

I have to agree with u!!!..i just watched it and i cried at the end!!!
very good movie

Oh, did you, guys ? This movie I found totally crazy ! It is full of inaccuracies ! And even ridiculous ! The only thing that matters and takes the whole time is this Fersen romance, so that the French revolution and important events happening to the royal family are just dropped !

To me, it all look like a huge American musical comedy, with costumes and feathers !

Pim, are you referring to the 1938 version or the one recently released? :?

Oh, yes.

I understand what you are saying about the Norma Shearer version.
It does have many inaccuracies, but considering it is one of the few Marie Anoinette movies to go over the queen's entire life, it is 'decent'. I watched it on TV not that long ago, and I told my friends, "Just forget the first 2 hours of the film, it's the last half-hour that's worth watching!" Norma Shearer's portrayal of Marie being torn away from her children and her execution are heart-braking, but besides that it is, as you say, too much feathers and glitter!

Also, another point on the film: they show Marie Antoinette being so romantic with the Duc d'Orleans, when I don't even think she was accused of that in her day! They totally forgot the Comte d'Artois, which was the one she liked. I suppose they, as usual, underestimated their audiance.

Oh, yes, I agree with you both. But I still cry like a ninny all through that movie.
