Post Grace Elliott
I read in wikipedia that the scottish aristocrat, Grace Elliot, mistress of the Duc d'Orléans, went to Belgium on a secret mission for Marie Antoinette.

She was a admirer of the Queen, even if mistress of her enemy :? There's a film about rhe relationship of Grace Elliot and the Duc d'Orléans, I would like to see it!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Elliott

I would like to know more about this "friend" (?) of the Queen...

Interesting indeed!
I don't know any more than you...

But do you Know which is the nature of this mission and in which year?
If this mission was supposed of helping Marie-Antoinette, it would be astonishing that it's the Duke of Orleans which suggested that to his mistress:D

There's a French movie by Rohmer, indeed, "l'Anglaise et le duc". This film shows a friendship between Grace and Orleans, no love story.

I only know what's said in wikipedia:

«The duke enjoyed enormous popular support amongst the people of Paris, although his Scottish mistress Grace Elliott was a secret royalist, who later admitted to having gone to Belgium on a secret mission for the queen. She carried messages to baron de Breteuil, who was now acting as Louis and Antoinette's secret Prime Minister-in-exile.»

This is in Marie Antoinette's page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marie_Antoinette in the chapter "A republican monarchy?"

According to this article :
"The Governor of the Tuileries, the Marquis de Champcenetz, managed to escape the mob despite incurring heavy wounds. He was sentenced to death by the revolutionaries but managed to escape Paris with the help of Mrs. Elliott.
"

Thus It was in 1792 when the royal family was in the Tuileries. A mission to help the royal family to flee Paris. I doubt that the Duke of Orleans was interfered this mission :D

Yes, I doubt that it was with Orléans and even of Provence help that Grace Elliot tried to help Antoinette...

Yes, I saw the film "The Lady and the Duke." It was good but not great. Grace Elliot was quite a character. Not part of the queen's close circle although she admired the queen and tried to help her.

yes i saw that film too on dvd a while back. it was fascinating, the way it was filmed with paintings as backgrounds. i think grace elliot was incredibly lucky getting away with her life as so few didn't! i wonder if the scottish wit got her out of it? i can't think why she was spared?

Post Re: Grace Elliott
I see this thread is quite old. However, you can in fact...read Grace Elliot's memoirs which Ifinished in hours!

If anything it is a great example of the duc d'Orleans diminishing character and compromised position. His friend Grace Elliot is all too brave and saddened by the entire state of the Royal Family. She even sheds a little light (while small) on du Barry's prison stay prior to execution.

Give it a look!

Can one find these memoirs online, say on Project Gutenberg?
