has anyone ever seen or heard of the japanese manga/anime called rose of versailles? it's about a young woman named oscar, raised as a man, who is marie antoinette's royal guard. i haven't seen or read any of it because i don't think it has been released in the united states, but it looks interesting! there are a lot of liberties taken with characters and such, but the artwork for the series is in the classic seventies style and is really beautiful!

again, it is not entirely historically accurate. for example, the affair between marie antoinette and fersen is portrayed as being a major scandal at the time, which we all know it wasn't, and polignac is shown as being a vindictive woman who is trying to use marie antoinette to her own advantage.

despite the obvious departures from historical fact, it looks like it might be an interesting series. has anyone read the manga or seen the anime?

Ah… if you knew… my passion for Marie-Antoinette comes from this animated drawing! I was immediately interested by the character of Marie-Antoinette, and I then wanted more… and since I want always more!

This animated drawing is formidable! It's true that there are of course errors and inventions (Rosalie of the Conciergerie a girl of Polignac…), but the base is respected. And the character of Marie-Antoinette is very respected (except with Fersen indeed)… much more than in the film of Coppola… I find that the author of this animated drawing knew to retranscribe the gaiety of Marie-Antoinette in her youth, her unconcern etc… but also her dignity during the revolution

And the drawing are beautilful! I advise to see it so!

But the translations of the animated drawing are not specified....just french and Japanese are mentioned...but in Italian it must exists may be...

hmm. yes, i don't think the anime has been translated into english. the manga was, but i don't think it is available any longer. but there are always american fans who make their own subtitled versions of shows that haven't officially been released here, so i will keep my eyes open!

I love Rose of Versailles, it is absolutely a manga masterpiece. And the anime is way too touching, far more better than Sofia's movie.
