Post Versailles and the revolutionaries
The revolutionaries seemed so intent on destroying the Royal family and any links to them, why did they not destroy actual buildings of Versailles?

The did not destroy Versailles, but the destroyed many other beautiful palaces only because they were owned by members of aristocracy or royal mistresses....
(I think that Versailles was a little too big to be destroyed quickly... and the revolutionaries loved to see the decadence of the royal palaces they raided... :? :? :? )

I suspect they planned to live there themselves!

Who knows...maybe they planned to destroy it in next years. It wasn't their main purpose at the beginning. At the beginning they were to kill all aristocrats. It was their main goal. :( Next step was building new authorities. But later...who knows...

On the other hand I don't think they wanted to destroy all French legacy. First of all they hated Ludvik XVI and Marie Antoinette, not all French kings.

I've read that some Girondin revolutionaries wanted to sell Versailles... It was not a bad idea...But what happened to Versailles during Napoleon and during the Restauration?

I think I read that Napolean gave the petit Trianon to one of his relatives....

That is true Mme Merteuil. And to his officers and loyals, like Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, who got the kingdom of Sweden and started the present line of royal family. :?

Jules, I think Grand Trianon was not a favourite castle in the time of Louis XVI, so there was no big changes from the previous years.

I suppose I can't really see the Palace itself as being of any real importance to the revolutionaries. What was important to them was tearing Marie-Antoinette and Louis down from the throne and wiping out the aristocrisy.

I suppose maybe too, that as much as they loathed the aristocrisy of the time, they may have still had respect for past Royalty and so left the palace intact.

The Grand Trianon was where Marie-Antoinette's baby Spohie died, so they did use it occasionally.

Versailles was used as apartments for many years after the revolution. Old soldiers and pensioners lived there. The Revolutionaries were practical enough to see it as valuable living space. Napoleon wanted to live there but he did not have the money to refurbish it.
