1m70 is a maximum I think, but Marie-Antoinette was a tall woman for the time...but she had small feet. :D

It depends from the witnesses, actually. Some ocular describe her as a tall woman, others as a woman of middle height.

Considering the fact that XVIIIth people were extremely small, I guess that, for our standards, Marie Antoinette would not appear so tall, indeed !

This would be confirmed by her shoes, that were small too.

I guess it would have been considered tall at the time but it's only a smidgeon over average height these days.

I do not know exactly… but in 1770 she was thin and she just started to grow… she was more young girl than woman :D

She was extremely small when she arrived in France, according to witnesses. And she was tiny and looked like a little girl. Nothing in her to awaken a teen's sexual appetites !

On this point, Coppola's movie is completely wrong. What boy could resist Kirsten Dunst ?

As an adult, Marie Antoinette was qualified as "tall" or "medium", it depends from the witnesses. For us, anyway, she would seem quite "medium", for people were smaller then. I tried with a conversion program... 63-64 inches seem ok...

5'5" isn't that tall. I mean, most of my female friends are 5'5" or taller, it's really average height. In America, anyway.

i don't know!

yes, i would imagine she would be short seeing as people were so small in those days.

5'5 would have been rather taller than average back in those days. Not exceptional though I would think, especially among well nourished aristocrats.

Another question....Belaiche Daninos in his book "76 days at the Conciergerie" talks about a storm during the handover ceremony of MA as dauphine which caused the Austrian part of the marquee to fall down. Any truth in this?
